Siena House New York 2021
Inspire Hope Foundation Inc supports Domestic Violence Shelter in October 2021. Domestic violence is a concern of global magnitude especially in the Covid-era where the isolation increases exposure to the victim and limits access to resources. Violence against women, particularly intimate partners, violence and sexual violence is a major public health problem and a violation of women's human rights.
Event Details
Violence against women is preventable. For this reason Inspire Hope Foundation supports organizations that care for victims of Domestic violence.
Estimates published by WHO indicate that globally about 1 in 3 (30%) of women worldwide have been subjected to either physical and/or sexual intimate partner violence or non-partner sexual violence in their lifetime. Violence can negatively affect women’s physical, mental, sexual, and reproductive health, and may increase the risk of acquiring HIV.
Siena House founded in 1990 is sponsored by the Tolentine Zeiser Community Life Center and is a temporary residence that assists homeless women and their children to move from a situation of homelessness and poverty to independence and self-worth. It serves eight to ten women annually, 21 years and older, who have suffered from domestic violence, are homeless, in need of temporary shelter, are in crisis or transition. It supports all efforts that empower women to a fuller participation in society and enhance their human dignity.
Sister Mary Doris founded Siena House at the height of the crack epidemic with a vision of a shelter that worked closely with young, first-time mothers, taking advantage of that window of opportunity just before and after a baby’s birth when parents—and particularly first-time moms—are specially open to help, offering a safe, supportive environment while empowering women to move toward independent living. Services include: personal and group counseling, residential housing, food and clothing and court advocacy. Arriving to the Siena house was an adventure - it is tucked between the road end and a Church in the corner of the Bronx; with a quaint and inviting exterior. The warmness of the staff Director, Sister Mary Doris (was so enthusiastic about the IHF care package) was indeed a treat.
Inspire Hope Foundation care packages were for supporting Siena house through items of personal hygiene and wellness.
200 Items of feminine hygiene products including pads, body wash, shampoo, hair conditioner, body sprays, body lotion, deodorants, cream, oils, were distributed to the House. Despite the restrictions of the Covid pandemic, you could still see the smiling eyes of the recipients beyond the masks worn of the moms in attendance. It was an honor and the happy faces of the women and their children helped to make this all worthwhile. They were very enthused to get the items. Hopefully, this brightened up their day adding to the positive experience + community living experience where all tenants are empowered to live productive, contributing lives within our society. Supporting them in October Domestic violence month was a treat and indeed a blessing.
